Jackie Philip | David Ralph Simpson | Diana Matthews

5 - 29 October 2018

As Autumn sets in, this exhibition brings together three contrasting artists whose colour palettes remember a wonderful summer and point to a change of season. Jackie Philips’ still-lifes carry a vibrancy of colour and luminosity that are characteristic of her handling of raw pigment on canvas. A postgraduate of the Royal Academy Schools, Jackie Philip has exhibited and taught around the world. With bold, sweeping brushstrokes, the latest paintings of David Ralph Simpson, chart the artist’s travels in the south of England. This collection of gestural paintings by this most popular artist, who comes from a modernist tradition, shows a handling of paint that has been conveyed with relish and immediacy. Diana Matthews, who trained at Bath Academy of Arts in the 1950’s, continues her practice of building beautifully textural compositions with layers that seem to have somehow collected whispers of the marks left by this artist’s tutors, including the likes of Anthony Fry and William Scott.
