David Simon Contemporary has represented and had close associations with a lot of New English Art Club members over the years. The NEAC which was established in the 1880s by artists such as Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent and Stanhope Forbes, now has some one hundred members across the country. The group was founded by a number of artists dissatisfied with the entrenched attitudes of the Royal Academy and sought a direction with greater freedom and vibrancy. Through the 1920s the group flourished with members such as Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, Duncan Grant and Mark Gertler. The New English Art Club and its Members played a significant part in the development of 20th century British art.
This exhibition includes the work of eleven carefully selected members, giving an insightful overview of the Association today, some 140 years after its inception. With a diverse variety the show demonstrates the NEAC Member's particular ability to balance contemporary style and approach with the traditions of British painting.
