In its autumn exhibition dedicated to Modern British and European art, David Simon Contemporary is delighted to centre the show around the Scottish painter William Gear RA (1915 - 1997). A collection of this artist’s original paintings are featured in the exhibition, ranging from the 1940s through to the 1990s. The show includes works by artists he was associated with, including Lynn Chadwick, Eduardo Paolozzi, Terry Frost and Patrick Heron. Another, earlier, association from the late 1930s includes the artist Fernand Léger, whom he studied under in Paris and the exhibition includes a couple of examples of Léger's printmaking. In 1949 William Gear became a significant figure of the CoBrA art movement, the same year in which he held a two-man exhibition with Jackson Pollock in New York.
Patrick Heron and William Gear were both early exponents of the process of screen-printing and we are delighted to include some of the best examples of Heron’s original printmaking available.
As a contemporary accompaniment to the show, the latest paintings by Heath Hearn (b. 1966 - ) are featured. Heath Hearn, based in south east Cornwall is inspired by his local landscape and coastal position. Often inspired by painters from the British art movement, his influences can be noted as he creates images with his own unique and distinctive approach.
