George Dannatt British, 1915-2009
David Simon Contemporary is delighted and privileged to be working with the George Dannatt Trust. We represent a broad overview of the work of George Dannatt a decade after his death. This collection of his work from the 1960’s through five decades, carefully selected by David Simon, charts his exploration of geometry, form and space and relating hard abstraction to references of landscape.
Having established his career in painting later in life, Dannatt was successful in exhibiting with important Mayfair galleries. His work has been exhibited across Cornwall and London as well as Switzerland, France, Germany and the United States of America and his work can be found in the permanent collections of Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, Bournemouth University, Southampton City Art Gallery, and Royal Air Force, as well as other important public collections.
George Dannatt became good friends with Patrick Heron in the 1950s, which drew him further into the St Ives artistic circle, having a significant impact on his own painting practice. He was closely associated with Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Terry Frost, Denis Mitchell, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, Adrian Heath and John Wells. Dannatt was a connoisseur-turned-painter, with an extensive and impressive collection of works by the St Ives Group. In his later years he donated a considerable part of his collection to Pallant House Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery and Bournemouth University.
